"The language barrier can pose challenges"

Riskonet expands its network to Japan with Joe (Ryosuke) Toyoda as a new partner, aiming to operate in the exclusive Japanese risk management and insurance market.

This spring, Joe Toyoda joined our network of international experts in safety and risk management. With more than 30 years of experience in loss prevention engineering, he brings valuable expertise to Riskonet’s global network.

During a conversation with one of his former colleagues, who is also our partner for the Asian market, Joe was introduced to Riskonet. Prior to this conversation, Joe had never heard of Riskonet. He was instantly interested as his experience and expertise aligned well with Riskonet’s operations.

Joe Toyoda is currently supporting one of Riskonet’s Dutch clients who has an important key supplier in Japan. Joe highlighted that any delays or disruptions in supplier operations would significantly impact the Dutch clients' production, stating, “This is why our efforts to improve risks are crucial and critical.”

“The Japanese market’s approach to risk management and insurance differs significantly from that of the United States and Europe, which can be quite challenging”.

Challenging language barriers

When representatives from the Dutch company visit Japan, they often encounter language barriers due to their lack of understanding of Japanese. Above this, the English proficiency of the Japanese staff is limited. “The language barrier can pose challenges”, explains Joe. In addition to overcoming language barriers, Joe can obviously provide expertise in risk engineering, saying, “I am capable of offering assistance in both areas.”

One of Joe’s key challenges and opportunities lies in navigating the complexities of the closed Japanese insurance market. He believes that both language barriers and the unique operating methods of the Japanese insurance market can create challenges for companies outside of Japan. “The Japanese market’s approach to risk insurance differs significantly from that of the United States and Europe, which can be quite challenging.”

Limited acceptance of international standards

Another challenge is that local Japanese companies typically do not adhere to international standards like NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), API (American Petroleum Institute) and ISO standards. Joe aims to address these challenges step-by-step by convincing local Japanese companies of the importance and benefits of adopting international standards. “When local companies want to engage in overseas business, they need to adhere to international standards; otherwise, it will be very difficult”, he explains. Specifically, Joe plans to visit these Japanese companies and deliver presentations on the significance and advantages of adopting international standards. “Local Japanese companies usually have their own safety philosophies. Our job is to adapt and then gradually persuade them through awareness.”

Joe is enthusiastic about contributing to Riskonet and helping the company expand its presence in the Japanese risk management market. “I am very pleased to support them in their business expansion over here.”
